Guide to Loropetalum

Fragrant, spider-like flowers that bloom in late winter or early spring, when few other plants are in bloom.

Site in partial shade in fertile, humusy, moist but well-drained soil.

Loropetalum, commonly known as fringe flower, is a low-maintenance, evergreen flowering shrub related to witch hazel, and native to Japan and Southeast Asia. Loropetalum throws very fine blooms that can range in color from white to crimson, depending on the varietal. Although the plant prefers rich, organic, well-draining soil that is slightly acidic, loropetalum is actually fairly easy going about less-than-perfect soil conditions. Loropetalum does not draw any pests, and does not require pruning to induce growth or bloom, although it can be pruned for decorative effect. The shrub prefers partial shade, and a few applications of fertilizer throughout the year will keep it robust. Water regularly to keep the spoil moist until the plant is well established; once it is mature, loropetalum is fairly drought tolerant.
