 If growing the tropical as a houseplant, fill a container a size larger than the current nursery pot with a mixture of potting soil and sand. Drill drainage holes through the base of the container before planting and cover the holes with mesh. Position the container near a north- or east-facing window exposed to bright, indirect light.

 Irrigate the houseplant with water at room temperature every week to maintain an evenly moist soil. Water it deeply so excess water drains from the drainage holes. Container soils tend to dry out sooner, so inspect the soil frequently to make sure it remains evenly moist most of the time.

 Fertilize the plant using fish meal or another well-balanced liquid formulation at half its strength every four weeks from May to the end of October.

 Replant the tree every two to three years using a container slightly larger in size. Prune the roots if growing it as a bonsai tree before planting it in its new pot.

 Snip off dry, diseased or dead branches with scissors as you see them to keep the plant healthy and maintain its appearance.
